Discussion Group Week 2 - Working Methodologies

For this task I chose to try Sylvia's method - Practicing Place. I walked around near deans gate, an area I have a view of from my window but somewhere I have not explored in great detail. I wanted to explore this area to get more of an idea about how the place was laid out. I have included some of the buildings from this area in my work before so it made sense for me to explore the area a bit more.

Whilst I was there I also took notes about the weather and just general thoughts and feelings.

By going to this place and taking notes and making observations, I feel as though I was able to look into the idea of perspective more. I studied the buildings up close and far away. in my work perspective doesn't matter, the scenes need to make sense but if the perspectives don't match then it doesn't matter massively. The each individual sections of my collages can have different perspectives as long as the scene mainly makes sense when it is all together. 

I have enjoyed studying this area and drawing, both digitally and with a pencil, I tried to challenge myself with the drawings by limiting the time I had to draw but also only drawing in continuous line. I have enjoyed this way of working as I feel like I explored the area and was also able to produce some drawings out of it. I have thought about the idea of perspectives but I have also been able to draw freely.

Artist Statement

My work is about place and building relationships between places. It is about bringing the idea of ‘paradise’ or the ‘perfect’ landscape into everyday life. Taking fragments of the places I have visited and turning them into a new place. They then become parts of a whole fragment. I have built relationships between the places in the images by placing the fragments next to each other. I have been finding ways to make these places exist in physical form as well as digitally. I have been adding depth to these flat images, because they are more than just fragments of locations placed together, they have now become their own landscape. To me each fragment of the image reminds me of a specific place and time, however other people may just see a landscape. The way they are presented either shows them as their individual fragments or as a whole fragment. This has been an exploration into bringing collaged landscapes to life.

Thibault Brunet

 Thibault Brunet is an artist who explores photography through cyberspace. Brunets work is very digital and constructed. His images are usually screenshots of games and items constructed in the digital space. He has also done series exploring France through Google Maps and sometimes would take parts of the images and remove them from their original place to decontextualise them. Brunets work feels similar to mine as we are both working with places that exist digitally. However where I am then taking these digital places into the physical world he keeps them digital. His work is very much based on landscape but not always a whole landscape, sometimes he only focuses on individual buildings however the way he presents them seems to place them in their own landscape. Taking individual buildings out of their context and placing them in their own landscape gives them a completely different feel. Action Plan

Outline your objective.    Where do you want to be?  (Don’t be vague or general.)   I want to be confident in my work and my ability to talk about my work, more specifically the context. I want to be able to tell people why I am doing what I am doing rather than just showing them my work. I also want to continue to develop my ideas and produce an outcome that I am really happy with. I want to explore digital modelling and also ways of combining photography and sculpture, both digitally and physically. I have started to do this but I want to do it at a higher level of quality.     Where are you now?   Right now I am starting to explore more options of how I can create and display work. I am focusing on both physical and digital ways of working and continuing to look into the ideas of photography and place. Right now I am enjoying using clay and I want to continue to use this as I move forward.     How I will you get to where you want to be? What will you do next? Outline 3-5 clear steps
